I'll keep this short since I plan to do a long-form on this topic.
I've spent the day with my Mum because she called me in the morning crying to let me know that social services has refused to pay the €600 back payment on her 2024 utility bills. for those who don't know, in Germany you pay a fixed amount on your utilities including heating, garbage etc estimated on your consumption of the previous year.
Since water, electricity, garbage, landlords home insurances and co have gone up 100-200% (depending on the utility) she's been hit with over €600. Social has now decided to give her €124 stating on the letter that she needs to manage her utility consumption better. The atrocity of this is out of this world.
Our elders, those who've paid their dues all their life, those who've rebuild this country are literally being abandoned while others who come to this country get full dentals, full payment of rents, deposits, utilities, back payments FFS they even get money to buy a fucking car.
So I spent the day comforting my mother and I'm going on Monday to file an official complaint at social services while pressing charges with the social court at the same time.
We're getting to a point where the actions of the government and their treatment of our elders is unacceptable.

It has crossed my mind but that's not a solution to a nation wide situation. She'll be alright, I'll make sure of that but I wont let this slip either. Just can't share the docs right now, too much personal information.

Last year I rented a place in the Netherlands, 750€ / month during a very mild winter. then my heating bill was srill €250(!!!!) a month, a f*ckin third of the rent on just heating.
Not a complete solution, nor one I'd advise carrying out before you're much older (and stand to do less jail time due to naturally shorter life).

Yes absolutely. I'll share the docs tomorrow need to censor some stuff first. See, I'm alright with them not covering the entire bill though they should but telling her they're not paying because she's not managing her utility usage as expected by them is ridiculous. And if you knew here you'd know that she's not a person who has the lights on all day, heaters running on max or cooks all day. The costs have exploded and that's the real reason why she got hit by such an insane backpayment.
They're give most of it to our Ukrainian visitors. See, if you're looking for a job the job centre will tell you that it's acceptable for a national to travel up to 150km by train every day to get to work. if you're from the Ukraine they'll give you the money to buy a car.

The actions of the government have always been unacceptable, but it just takes time for people to be hit with the realization. I'm not sorry it's taken so much from her, and I hope you are able to get through this ordeal as smoothly as possible, but I also know fighting against tyranny is an uphill battle, and almost always ends in heartbreak.

Germany is as bad as Canada. Both countries are socialist and governments like to steal from the citizens. Many old people here struggling here also with no help form the government other then a tiny bit of money .
