= ANNOUNCEMENT = Eden.nostr.land relay is going away! We will be sunsetting it in 30 days on August 26. We hope that is enough time for everyone to backup and restore their notes on other relays. If you successfully paid admission for Eden in the last month and would like a refund please send me a DM requesting a refund. It’s been a wild ride running Eden (and the relays that came before it) and we are deeply grateful to all the users who supported us since the beginning.

It must be related to the cost of running it? If the incentives are not aligned, no doubt that if this one is going away others will follow [800299]
Shouldn't this be the responsibility of nostr clients? Like having a button on your profile screen called "Broadcast all", just like for example Damus has the "Broadcast" button on a single note.
I suppose the relay has no responsability regarding your notes excepting if it's a paid relay like in this case. They are doing things well to refund people and helping Nostriches to export their notes. People need to understand that if they want to backup their notes undefinitely they need to push notes to their own relay. We need more ansible playbook and docker containers to help people to deploy their own relay for few bucks a month ⚡
I agree with you that the best way to ensure your own notes preservation is to self host, but you do realize that the average Joe will never do that, right? So we need a good enough fallback solution for the masses.
Yes you're right. Maybe something new like a script which backup notes into flat files on some cloud encrypted storage could be a solution for paid relay. People still won't know how to run a relay but will be capable of importing files through a relay UI that allow to import events. Something like that 😅
My guess: its difficult to keep a paid service up in a small scale. Its easier to run for free than paid. Because when paid there is more responsibility and when the number of paying customers are super low, you are having a semi full time job with very little return.
It was one of the first relays I had paid for if not THE first and so I thank you for letting me write to it 🤝🫂 image

That’s how I met all y’all! 🥹 I’m extremely grateful for joining eden.nostr.land. I’m always going to keep my badge 🤙🏼💜
Yea. Hope all is well in everyone's personal lives all that matters. nostr will figure out the rest (holy crap we are early 🤯). Have a good day y'all, God bless
You can manually obtain a copy of your data, which you can restore anytime to any relay. Alternatively, you can sign up for my auto backup service, which takes weekly backups. Additionally, you will receive some free storage on Proton Storage for your data. You will get both things here:
any insight on how to find out exactly which relay I'm using for my notes? Originally one of the #Nostriches at the #Bitcoin conference help me set up #Amethyst on my #Android to start accessing #Nostr ... Beyond that, I don't know much. Is there's some way to see which relay I'm connected to? View quoted note →
I think nostr would benefit from an infrastructure fund, that people could donate to, and support relays and take nostr to a wide audience. People donate to the fund, and then relay send invoices, for infrastructure only. The fund decides what % of the invoice to pay.
A post mortem would be awesome. Give prospective relay managers an idea what to expect wrt expenses, time commitment, pain points, etc
Thanks @jack for taking interest. It’s due to cost mainly. Costs peaked $593 USD in March when Eden was still geographically distributed and we averaged over 900 connections on each node for their respective time zones. We’ve since taken costs down, and the bills totalled $217 in the month of June. Granted there have been some issues accepting payments in the last month mainly because Eden is running on less resources, but even so new signups tanked way before that to one or two a day. We’ve got this far and we should have been able to turn things around however for me in particular work and personal life responsibilities have taken priority now more than ever, and that meant less time to code up new revenue streams in a timely manner.
Have you considered a subscription model? How many users are on your relay? I’m sure you have considered the option but it’s just a thought
This is why I’m so interested in the Sats4Files model where users pay per byte… rate-limited style. Sats4Files automatically swaps data for #bitcoin over Lightning by hiding the file’s decryption key as the Time-Locked Contract’s preimage. Micropayments under-the-hood, monthly payment accumulates. These arbitrary monthly prices may not be sustainable for relays. I’ve been working constantly on Sats4Files over the last week or two, trying to find a way to make it faster as it relies on many 32 byte elliptic curve operations. Wish me luck! 🍀
Thanks for giving the numbers a good rest 🤘I’ve been thinking of running a relay for awhile now but also don’t see how the operating cost / subsriber fee balances out. Just tossing something in the 🔥.. but maybe Eden could be a foundation / non profit funded by some donations. It sounds allot like centralisation though 😅but somebody has to be footing the bill for the non relay paying plebs or do I have things backwards?🙃 Anyways I thank you for your service 🫡 and may your new responsibilities bring you a 🖖

I think clients can start showing who is running the relays and people can then zap the operators as donations. I don't need zaps right now. Support other relays.

Thanks for having that out until now! Is the operation cost the main motivation for shutting it down? By the way, how does one safely backup? Are you going to re-broadcast the notes stored on the relay?
what does the “backup and restore” process regarding notes look like?
Hi Cameri, so, I would like to pay for one months cost of your server if we can add NIP-50 to it. I guess I can pitch in for any dev work involved. I don't have deep pockets but I can do one month and maybe more #relay #grownostr
If you can send me your Bitcoin address I will send you half of the cost on Friday and the other half on Aug 1. #relay #grownostr
Honored to have learned from you, and I'm sure you didn't make this decision lightly. Nothing but respect . You fostered in an era and invested a great deal of time <3 Even that you're like "well...." shows how kind you are.

Yes please - wanna hear about it
Thank you so much for running the relay. It was one of the first ones I added & Angela and yourself were always incredibly helpful. Completely understand your decision, sometimes priorities change. 🫂
Where transactional cost on the Nostr network cannot begin to pay for initial costs on every project, not in every case is this an unfavorable situation. I'm only focused on making a small donation to cover the your initial cost if I can. No solution exists in perpetuity - all technologies evolve or are replaced over time. Few can justify prolonged burn rates indefinitely subsidizing others. Life responsibilities rightly take precedence. I think this is a wise decision imho
