I don't follow the "respect is earned" philosophy. I respect everyone automatically and then each person has the opportunity to lose my respect based on their behavior.

So doing nothing will keep the respect.
While doing something could potentially lose respect.
There's something wrong with that.
I think I like this. I tend to see the potential in people and then feel let down when they don't reach my high expectations.
Treating someone respectfully is different than having respect for them.
I agree. How can you have high trust societies if your default is not to respect someone upon first interaction?
Respect is provisionally granted. Reverence is earned.
Based on behaviour only?
Is there another way?
I suppose I should have asked you to clarify what you are respecting? The human being or the human being plus a belief system. What about ideology? You may learn that someone holds to an ideology that you oppose based on your own beliefs while at the same time know nothing about their behaviour. Certain behaviours are expressions of ideologies. Some people figure out that they do not want or need to see expressions of behaviour because the other person’s adopted ideology or belief system tells them what they need to know.
People lose respect so fast.
True.
You are what you eat. You’ll know them by their fruit. I believe that behaviors are downstream of what you believe.
Stand by my original claim, you’ll know them by their actions/behaviors
As usual @npub14hq5...jjzu got me thinking, and this time it was about “respect.” It’s an interesting psychological posture that comes in 3 basic forms, respect for personhood, respect for character traits and respect for a role in society. I am in the camp where I fundamentally respect someone’s personhood, but when it comes to character I am definitely in the “it’s got to be earned” camp. From day one I am focusing in on both the micro human transactions and also the big interactions. I want to see how a person builds their story over time. I also want to hear from others who have had dealings. I want to gather information about how they handle the really tough situations that come from time to time. Yeah, I am firmly in the camp of respect is earned and NEVER given lightly! Thanks Contra for the prompt!😁

Dude, look at the work itself. Respect means to look back upon with reverence. You cannot look back upon something that has not happened, therefore you cannot respect someone you haven’t met. However, you can treat people with courtesy, regardless. But courtesy and respect are not the same thing.
By his own definition respect can only be lost never gained. That's a nonsensical philosophy. That would mean that everyone will lose everyone's respect by the end of their lifetime since everyone does stupid things eventually. Which also means the word itself becomes meaningless and non-existent at some point.
I call it respect because it costs me something to give it and something to lose it. That’s the part that matters, not the label.
Well, there's respect and respect
Many words have taken on a whitewashed colloquialism. I am a firm believer however in how words have meaning. If a common understanding of meaning is lost than we lose the ability for communication and understanding. Look at the attack on meaning the woke have waged around gender and all that. It’s a socialist tactic to destroy the common ground of understanding we all share.
