Yes, there is a chance Proton Wallet is a honeypot. Let's assume it is one: We are not their target audience. People who know no better already live in a honey pot. An opportunity to expose a taste of freedom tech to 100M+ users, shitcoin-free? That's massive. Most of them won't fall into the rabbit hole, but some of them will. Net positive. Just like our life paths are all different, our ways to understand bitcoin are too.
In my book it is totally fine if their offer is limited to their users as long as the wallet is self-custodial and open source, no? Also they have some custom recovery method? that may require to have an account? > Our robust recovery methods mean you can never be locked out from your Bitcoin — not even by us.
any custodial could be a honeypot no? otherwise these days everyone and their mothers are making digital wallets no matter the currency and the service offered...
Why? Because you need a proton mail for using the wallet ? I'm open to multiple wallets alternatives, I won't be stacking all, or even 70%, of my lifetime corn savings in a single cold wallet key. That's a terrible idea. Split your savings in several wallets, with different safety methods. This is the best security
They are incentivised to make this work and do it right. It would allow users who already pay for their subscriptions in BTC to have that subscription automated in house.
How is it a safer way to hold Bitcoin? I’m in the first six months of my BTC journey and am learning as much as I can. I understand the various wallets that are available and want to learn more about your project
After a quick search: > The Swiss company sells itself on its privacy features, promising to let uses "take control" of their personal data. > But it had been legally obliged to collect data from an account said to be linked to a "climate activist" arrested by French police, ProtonMail said.
According to trading activity, #BitcoinETF buyers are still HODLing, There has been no sign of panic yet, so it's likely to take a much larger decline in #Bitcoin before they finally give up. A lot of people aren't paying attention but that could happen as soon as next week, especially after another big selloff this weekend. I don’t understand what’s clownish about this. It’s a Bitcoin wallet that’s part of your proton email. Which can be anything and it’s not attached to your identity in any way. Private email + bitcoin wallet? I think it’s a win. Curious to learn more about how can it be a honeypot if all the data is encrypted and they themselves don’t ask for any personal data like Gmail does.
It’s no safer than any other custodial hot wallet that generates keys online. But in their words, it’s safer than exchanges of course. I need to look more into the recovery process, I’m guessing it’s a seed as usual, but maybe the email account plays a role somehow. But not informed on that front tbh.
Not sure what you mean, lots of people use their products. They have plenty of UI surface to do the onboarding.
Could be. The proper setup for a wallet is self custody with passive bitcoin chain sync via #blockstream satellite. People will learn privacy the hard way.
There is a lot of different proper set ups but yeah just get a hardware wallet generate seed with entropy and you are all set.
Are there really ANY companies that WOULDN'T give customer info to local authorities if ordered to? Please name them.
Are there really ANY companies that WOULDN'T give up customer info to local authorities if ordered to? Please name them.
You're not making sense. Metadata is a category of data, but you seem to be calling it "not data" and suggesting the difference is like, whole different etymological roots or something (incorrect)
There is. Metadata is information about a set of data. So no, they are not the same. Hence one is called METAdata and the other data.
But are there ANY companies we can trust? Or are they ALL honey pots? I appreciate your default distrust but I'd love to know which companies ARE NOT honey pots. Or should we just criticize and bash every company on earth?
The whole point of #Bitcoin is to be P2P. To cut out big brother. No third party required. If you want to do your part, get a node, a small solo miner and a hardware wallet. And wait.
“companies are evil” is a stupid take anyone will hand over if pressured to, would they rather get arrested or give up data what you do is you stop storing data unnecessarily
