Because bunkers are slow at best and buggy as hell at worst.. They use too much networking and users don't have reliable relays or networks. There's enough bugs already on nostr without that AND the google thing AND I like amber and extension signers like sidecar.top. Only cause you asked ser 🙏

I logged in on nostr.com website years ago and surely used google sso to sign in because now i don't have private key and can only log in to clients that have google sso as an auth method. Now i'm fckd if i can't retrieve it somehow because I'm trying to build a client myself and don't want to make a new account. Thread navigation on nostr.com is very bad. You can't suggest this to family and friends.

I haven't used anything FROST-based, but I think I would if I could do it in a way that seems more secure than regular NIP-46, and convenient to use. For it to be more secure than regular NIP-46, I would want to require all shards for signing and keep exclusive control over at least one shard myself. If there isn't anything in the cryptography underlying FROST which makes it inherently less secure than using an unsharded key, it seems that this way of using it would be at least as secure as regular NIP-46. And then on the convenience side, the actual signing would ideally be controlled through an app that sits on my phone and feels generally like Amber, and that app should probably hold one of the shards over which I have exclusive control. I've only taken a cursory glance at FROST, but if there is something that provides this kind of experience or something equivalent, I think I'd try it.

Yes, it is more secure to not have a central server that you trust to not sign bogus events in your name. But then it doesn't work with any Nostr app. By doing it with a central server that speaks NIP-46 one can reuse their Google/Pomegranate bunker URI in any app, even if that app doesn't support the thing directly. But Pomade does the signing locally if I remember correctly, you could look into that. It is deployed on Flotilla. And there is FROSTR (which has been renamed, probably, to Igloo or something else) for the full self-sovereign setup in which you run all the things. They have an Amber-like app that does the signing in your phone.

You shard your key in many parts and give it to semi-trusted operators to sign stuff in your behalf. Later you need to be able to contact these operators to get their shards back so you can rebuild your key, or ask them to delete them. So you need an alternative authentication mechanism. Doesn't have to be Google, as I said above, it can be any other method, but Google was easy enough to start with and would reach lots of people.

Pomegranate is pretty fast, and it doesn't require reliable relays. The trust angle in option 2 is a fair question for remote signing in general though: NIP-46 works by a bunker holding your keys and signing events for you, so whoever runs it effectively signs in your name.

Browser extension dev here (NostrComments). My honest reason is a sixth one: I don't speak NIP-46 yet, only local keys and NIP-07. There also seems to be some early stage NIP-55, igloo-android apparently can hold a shard and add its partial signautre, get NIP-55 requests, send signing requests to nodes, and return the signed event. That's very close to what I was asking about, now I just have to actually try it.

I think the single operator might be an issue because for new users they don't care or know about all this which was the point of obfuscating to Google login. So when I was building I built my own. A small correction to my reply above, after thinking it through: NIP-46 will land in Attest, the signer extension I also maintain, not in NostrComments itself. Key handling belongs in the signer. NostrComments keeps speaking NIP-07, so once Attest supports bunkers, Pomegranate comes along for free, for NostrComments and for every other NIP-07 app.

It also controls one key shard, meaning it can participate in any threshold reconstruction whenever the other custodians cooperate or are compelled. On top of that, the operator sees all traffic routed through its own backend, including any relay queries or API calls users make through the Pomegranate instance, which reveals behavioral patterns even without reading message content. And because the kind sixteen forty-four events are public, the operator can cross-reference its private email table against the relay graph to confirm which pubkeys are active and which have gone quiet. Put together, the operator isn't just a custodian. It's the single point that can connect real-world identity, cryptographic identity, and live network behavior without needing Google, law enforcement, or any outside help.

Latency is only a problem if you are signing dozens of events per second. Pomegranate is made for humans. And encryption methods are supported, but they're unsafe, slow and shouldn't be used, it would be awful. NIP-4E is the only solution here. Reconstructing the private key locally is not encouraged. The entire point is to make clients not have access to the key.

You trust it with the ability to sign stuff on your behalf, but it doesn't get your key. You can remove its access anytime you want. The entire point is to allow a kind of delegation that doesn't require lending your key to others, nor breaking the network (other people don't have to know you've setup some arcane and stupid delegation mechanism). But yes, like any delegation mechanism (and any of the dozens of delegation proposals we've seen in Nostr) at the time you delegate to someone, they are trusted to some extent. The magic of Pomegranate is that you can revoke that trust any time you want.

It is perfectly possible for an operator to independently get your approval, or apply a rate-limit, a time limit, a kind check, anything it wants. There are currently two implementations of operator servers out there, but there could be many other variations and people could pick the ones they prefer. If Nostr and Pomegranate get more popular I expect to see lots of these servers out there with different policies so everybody can be happy.

6) I've built a hardware signer. The Favilla KEY generates the key on the device, keeps it in a secure element, and serves its own client to your phone straight off the device, so there's no login step to plug Pomegranate into. I do think it's the right answer for people who will never buy hardware, though. One question: is there a way to export the key later? Someone who starts on Pomegranate and later wants a hardware signer shouldn't have to give up their npub to move.

Pomegranate is not for everyone. The great thing about Nostr is that there are multiple options for how to sign your notes and one person doesn't have to care about what methods the others used. Yes, you can export the key anytime.
