There seems to be some confusion as to what Start9 is/does. Calling us a "node in a box" implies a complete misunderstanding as to what we do.
1. We build StartOS, a free and open source Linux distro optimized for self-hosting. You can download it for free and flash it to most computers. There is zero loss of functionality doing it this way.
2. We sell and warranty quality hardware at a competitive price with StartOS preinstalled as a means if funding development, rather than rely on charity like most open source projects.
3. We provide world class customer support for StartOS, our hardware, and 25+ software applications.
4. We love Bitcoin and express our opinions about it.

Imma try to get one just to test.
A+ customer support
It’s a great unit. I have a server one
I could look it up, but I figure I can also ask here: would StartOS run on an OrangePi 5 Plus (ARM based)?
StartOS works great on old laptops.
Mine had a >1year uptime before i updated to the latest version a couple of days ago.
I had to re-flash and of course was worried some things might not go as expected, but everthing went as smooth as it gets.
They are quite expensive though but the RAM and DB options are out of league with other similar products; they are massive. Great for multi-hosting solutions.
Thanks for what you do! Makes it easy to run a node for retards like myself💪😁

Best way to run a business.
You guys Rock! 🤙
Beyond the ability to run a Bitcoin node, the development of StartOS is truly moving toward true computational sovereignty. Each user decides how to use it and what to store or run on their StartOS server.
Contributing to the security of the Bitcoin network at a profit. A Bitcoin security provider, you might call it. That's what I call my operations as a noderunner, miner, and debater.
Ease of use, yes.
Competitive price? Debatable.
Your OS bricked one of my computers
Never using it again. I just use Docker now. So much better
Yeah… def not!!
Appreciative of you guys and your work! Proudly self-hosting for about 4 years. 🤘
My start9 is solid and I love it.

I purchased my first Start9 at Bitcoin2025 in Las Vegas. Incredibly east to set up. It is amazing!
Not on 0351, but StartOS 040 has official support for the Raspberry Pi 5. Not sure about orangepi though, probably.
Let's see. Can you post a link to a mini PC with similar specs at a meaningfully better price?
Dell micro tower refurbs are where it’s at $100-200. Swap out the HD and you’re good to go. Less than $300. Prob less than $200 if you shop a bit more.
I've spun up 2 DIY nodes and sent y'all a donation each time.
I'm running pruned on a $160 mini-PC just fine
This is dope

Gm
So $400-$500 all in. And not apples to apples. That's a used, refurbished computer with no warranty and no support.
Yes, warranty and support are value added. But you asked about hardware comparisons. We were just talking about equipment. I’m all in for mine for $175.
That's like me saying, "we sell a luxury car for X amount", and you saying, "I drive an old Kia".
Of course, and that's a great idea, maybe a better idea in many cases, but it's not a relevent comment here, since you're not comparing comptuers with similar specs.

Love it, thank you!
Kinda. I’m still running an intel i7 with 8GB ram. I wouldn’t exactly call it an old Kia. It’s not a gaming PC after all. It’s still a server.
I totally agree that you offer good hardware and warranty and support for a decent price.
I like that you provide the path for dyi people like myself. But if people just want the hardware. You can find comparable for less $. Again only comparing hardware-to-hardware and leaving out service and support.
i7 which generation? 2019?
i don't think they are in the business of selling old hardware. that's why you go to a pawn shop or buy on ebay, actually there's a heap of "refurbished" gear on amazon too. i doubt they have the time to deal with the headache of all that stuff when their product is the service and the OS and apps you can put on it.
don't need to pay to use it either, so that's a benefit to anyone and everyone who wants to use start9.
it's really an apples and oranges comparison. i have a HP G3 mini that works great for running stuff that cost me like 140 euros plus 200 for a 1tb SSD, but i don't need support or a warranty. i'm not even using the machine anyway. i wouldn't run start9 either because i build server software for a living. I'M the support :)
Hmmm I don’t remember which gen off the top of my head. It’s a couple years old for sure. But plenty of power for what I’m using it for. Im planning to upgrade the SSD soon

Love your products I teach a class teaching students how to use your OS which is the one that I recommend

I’m buying my first Start9 soon 👀
Is the Server One in stock right now? Any upcoming promos?
The home microserver market is finally coming together
Now if I can get a kick butt 200 netbook from this year it would be awesome 😁
Freedom, not just nodes; open source wins.
I would love to run a bitchat node on my start 9
I have zero regrets paying nearly double today's Server One rate on an Embassy Pro in support of mission #2 above. She's a beautiful beast and they really mean unmatched, world class customer support. Tnx & keep crushing it Start9 team
Love Start9 software, hardware, mission, and team members.
5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
No it didn't. Theres a chance it bricked one component, but likely what happened is
1 you made a mistake and a component died.
2 a component just happened to die.
I've built a lot of computers and installed os countless times (distro hopper with 25 years Linux time)
Yes it corrupted the EFI bootloader. Every update damaged the install and forced me to reformat and recover my data. Then one update hung and it never turned back on. Now it won’t even boot to install from USB. Just dead and stuck rebooting every 5 seconds.
I guess the dead computer in my garage isn’t dead cuz you installed Linux a bunch. GFY. I’m a noob who can’t navigate my way around a shell…
I've had your issue many times with windows installs and my go to fix is always nuke the drive and put Linux on it, then nuke that and put windows back on, works every damn time.
Memory, cpu or mobo might also be to blame.
I always recommend you as a sovereignty software package, including a bitcoin node.
Only issue here is a like to keep my BTC and my other hosting separated.
I don't want a million items running my my lightning node.
Just my money.
It’s on a Mac mini tho. It won’t boot to even allow for drive selection so I can reformat. EFI bootloader got cooked. Otherwise, yes, it would be a simple fix
These are solid deals. The Intel one isn't as comparable, since the real value of the Server Pure harware is its open firmware.
As you already know, our value prop is in the brand, community, convenience, and above all, support. Some people value those highly, others not, and for them we have always encouraged DIY to save some sats.
No promos on the radar, but there are some good discount codes lying around out there
Of course, but where is the issue? Run Bitcoin/Lightning/etc on one server and other things on another server?
You need to sell packages with two start9s then.
Will hunt them 👀
When Start9 phone?
Expand your open source #sovereignty toolkit.
It shall be your #bridge2freedom.

Graphene doing an excellent job there
When’s the next training cohort for support techs?
Thank you for your service ♥️ owner of a start9
Your loss more than mine.
