Put a penny in the stand with the water. And some sugar. It'll keep it happy longer. Also make sure to keep it watered. It'll slurp up a surprising amount of your initial fill.
As for lights the old big ones are nostalgic but can literally cause fires. LED's do the job and use much less power.

I'm seeing on Gemini that the penny and sugar may be myths. Maybe DYOR there. It's how I've done it based on what I was told but it looks like there's not a benefit and it may encourage bacterial growth.
Definitely keep it watered though.
Do also make a fresh cut. You don't need to cut much, but especially if you're not cutting it at the farm before coming home, you want some open capillaries to draw up water.
Also, if you ask me, Frasier Fir is the best. Spruces work but are spikey!
thanks for all the info! I think I'll just stick with water. keep it easy. sugar water and pennies with a 20m toddler running around seems an unnecessary risk.
I always put the penny below the stump anyway but yea, sounds like no real purpose.
Best of luck with the toddler around the tree. Maybe avoid glass ornaments...
yeap. I'm looking at felt ornaments this year
