Homemade Bitcoin Mining Dehydrator
Currently processing elderberry with a S9 set to 980w. I designed the dimensions of the box to be similar popular 1000w consumer dehydrators since that's the wattage at which the S9 is most efficient.
The door of the dehydrator simply presses into the front and I can control the vent gap for more or less airflow which also helps to control the temperature.
Highest temperatures I've been able to measure are around 135ยฐf, which I read is good for fruit. I can get temps as low as 90ยฐf with higher fan speeds and larger vent opening.
I cut a hole in the back of the box so the exhaust fan of the S9 fits snug. That way I can easily remove it and use for a different heating application when I need to.
The energy efficiency of this contraption knocks the socks off any other consumer dehydrator available and it cost next to nothing to build. All I had to buy was the screen for the trays for around $10. I had everything else laying around already.
I can fit a gallon of elderberry or 2 gallons of grapes per load with the 10 trays. Each bach of elderberry takes about 24hr to complete and the raisins take at least a couple days. So far the elderberry and grapes are all I've had a chance to try. Next up is garlic to make garlic powder. #plebminer #bitcoin #bitcoinmining #permaculture #permies #grownostr #homesteading #doublespendenergy #dehydrator #heatreuse

I tossed all the nettle stems and other weeds into the rabbit colony as a snack for the bunnies.

I used whole strawberries for the last batch in the Bitcoin mining dehydrator which took 3 days to complete. Now, I'm trying a batch with them cut in half. There is definitely a trade off between time spent prepping and processing to decrease dehydration time and just shoving stuff in the box and letting it run. Because I'm also mining Bitcoin I'm hyper aware of the energy cost to run the dehydrator.
We have been eating strawberries with everything! Strawberry yogurt, strawberry banana bread, fresh strawberries, strawberry ice cream. Pretty soon we are going to be tired of strawberries and start focusing on preservation instead of gobbling them up. Ended up selling some at the local Bitcoin meetup for sats too! Strawberries are my favorite.

Now with summer in full swing I feel like I need two dehydrators to keep up with all there is to harvest. Got my eyes on elder flower, red clover, gooseberry, dill, oregano, oyster mushrooms and on and on...

Grew a good patch of dill last season which we used fresh to make pickles. This year a bunch has volunteered and is ready before the cucumbers.
I harvested most of it leaving a few behind in hopes that it continues to reseed itself.

I've been enjoying smoking mullein so I started wondering what else might be good to smoke growing around the homestead. After so quick research, I kept seeing a plant called skullcap in the herbal smoke blends.
I thought to myself, too bad I don't have any of that growing around here. Then I realized, I don't even know what it is or what it looked like. After looking at some pictures of skullcap, I couldn't recall seeing it growing anywhere on the homestead. Then, when I was picking up sheep fences near the pond I noticed a plant that I had seen before but never knew what it was. It was skullcap!
I'm excited to have learned a new plant and found it so quickly out in the wild. I'm looking forward to trying it in a smoke with some mullein.
