Hey NOSTR!
Inspired by @Jeff Booth , I’ve begun the journey of pulling my time, energy, and attention out of Big Tech. So far, I’ve:
-moved as much of my messaging over to Signal, Session and @White Noise
-Permanently deleted all (anti) social media accounts, including Instagram and X. Pumped to explore NOSTR via @primal
-permanently deleted my Google account. Current replacement stack = Proton for mail, calendar and authenticator, Bitwarden for password management, Organic Maps for GPS. (Still some work to do but this is a good start so far)
BUT….I’m still sitting inside the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac, etc.) So here’s my question:
Is it necessary to exit Big Tech at the hardware layer too? Or is reclaiming the app/protocol layer already 80–90% of the win?
If the answer is “yes, go further” what are the best paths right now?
Looking at options like Framework and System76 but open to suggestions.
I’m trying to move toward sovereignty without unnecessary complexity. But would favour sovereignty over complexity if need be.
Would appreciate thoughts from people further down this path.
(@ODELL, @MartyBent, @paul keating, @Ava, @IKITAO, @Gigi, @Derek Ross, @Shawn, @GHOST would love your thoughts but also, thanks for all the inspiration!)

Follow me. I post on this stuff.
I have an index on my profile written in markdown that links to past posts on freedom tech topics, along with topics that I plan on posting about in the future. You will need Amethyst for the markdown to render and work properly.
I'm not very active right now as I'm working on a graduate degree, but once that's done I'll get back to posting regularly again.
Congrats on your progress so far. I really enjoy Linux popOS. I think Linux is necessary over apple/Mac
Maybe something in these guides would help youbtoo. With a little effort even agentic ai can be fairly private

Awesome! We build full sovereign big tech replacements.Bitcoin node, cloud, messaging, video and voice calling to name a few. We have some big updates coming soon too! Welcome to the Freedom side.
This is the way. It's a lot of hard work and it's time consuming, but in the end it's worth it.
Will most definitely do that because Iove everything I am reading here
This is most definitely good info.
I'd add also about what the tech you use does.
Eg. Encryption stops the man in the middle, which is good, but if your device is compromised, encryption is pointless.
I run Linux laptops, one for work, one for personal.
A degoogled android phone for everyday use.
An old iPad for banking apps & for study apps that only work on iOS.
A Linux phone to experiment on.
As said before, understand & know your threat level will guide you how "secure" your digital life needs to be.
In the case of Apple, Mac and iPhone isn't just the hardware level. It's also the software level for almost all users (a couple people run a different OS on the Mac). If they control the OS, I don't see how you could trust any application running in it. They could be capturing anything on your screen at any time. At least with something like GNU/Linux you could audit and build from source. This issue can run down the stack of any system to various degrees (until we have fully open hardware/firmware). But Apple products stop you higher up the stack than a CPU or some hardware firmware. Any control you think you have within their box is permissioned.
Cant go wrong with graphene :) and linux
yes.

Asahi Linux
What are you doing for photos? I am finding #Ente to be an easy, private, reliable solution.
Immich
Buy a laptop and install Ubuntu. That's a good first step.
Get away from Proton - Tuta is great.
Get a NextCloud - in 1min you will configure your apple stuff get rid of icloud and have good backups.
Consider migrating to GrapheneOS it also takes 1min to flash a device. It can be a used Pixel. Just have it side by side with iOS for a couple of months and you will never look back.
Great inspiration.
Im doing more nostr but Im still using many legacy services.
Im only in the use nostr before any other social media. That alone does improve my mood.
Content so much better.
I recommend getting out of the Apple ecosystem as well. Apple strictly censors what's allowed on their phones and extracts a heavy tax on developers. Most of their hardware (laptops / phones) are also very user hostile (difficult to repair or upgrade).
GrapheneOS and Motorola are collaborating on a phone designed for GrapheneOS. I recommend switching to that when it comes out in the next year or so.
Appreciate the advice!
Thanks Bruno!
Anytime! That's my mission!!
Elevate everyone's cyber defenses and privacy.
Its awful to be the only free bloke in the room (or the only NSA evesdrop resilient bloke in the room)... Also because the mics of everyones smart wiretap/phones are catching me...
Haha, I feel you.
Curious now that I think about your advice…why ditch Proton?
big moves! deleting Google is next up for me
Syncthing is great replacement for cloud drives
before splurging on new PC hardware, try a lightweight distro on an older PC... MX Linux plays nicely with my laptop where Mint did not
To be honest I deleted the Google account a little too quickly. Shoot first ask questions later I guess. No regrets.
M2 runs linux nicely i hear.
Can someone breakdown to me so I can understand I’m new on here using Nostur I can some using primal what the the difference and which is better
Protonmail and the CERN
Protonmail was created in 2014 by CERN people (Conseil européen pour la Recherche nucleaire - European Organization for Nuclear Research). A service advertised as privacy centred, done by CERN should not be taken seriously as the CERN speech is full of bad spirit and bad taste jokes.
CERN started in 1954 and over the years, it's objectives, words and activities have been disturbing to many. The organisation does not only hold scientific research but also questionable "art". Strange dance by non-Catholics Gilles Jobin (who states: "Contemporary art can be as obscure to them as physics is to me") and Julius von Bismarck (who was once arrested for whipping the Statue of Liberty, and in CERN led 22 physicists in total darkness through the winding tunnels underneath Cern, eventually locking them in a small dark space, where they listened to an old recording of the philosopher Bertrand Russell discussing Plato, when many scientists state to have seen bright flashes of colour in the dark). More about it can be read on The Guardian, 2012. Some years latter Ruben van Leer released a whole "dance-opera" distasteful film made there called symmetry.
Mixing constant weird dance with research is not the only activity that resembles rituals at CERN. In 2016 their personnel dick another joke, a mock ritual killing occult ritual that was filmed and went viral online, to which CERN responded "Cern welcomes every year thousands of scientific users from all over the world and sometimes some of them let their humour go too far. This is what happened on this occasion." This mock ritual was performed in front of the 2 meter tall bronze statue of the idol Shiva the destroyer.
In our opinion, CERN's environment is too welcoming to bad spirit and bad taste. The organisation is just too lenient with distasteful jokes, to say the least. We reject these resemblances of rituals and many mentions to devils by their people over the years (e.g. Jordi Rose's recruitment lectures to hire demonologists or software engineers).
We are diametrically opposed to technology seen as a Faustian Bargain. We also reject the Revolutionary utopia of redemption by science and technology. We don't think menkind can resolve all his problems, eliminate pain, poverty, ignorance, insecurity, in short, everything we refer to as the effect of Original or actual sin. We affirm the Redemption by Our Lord Jesus Christ. We do not believe in a world run by science and technology, by propaganda and psychology, in order to attain happiness without the supernatural.
The research activity in CERN with the Large Hydron Colider (LHC) is also concerning to many. In the 7th of July, 2022, the LHC produced a mysterious crack on the electromagnetic field of the earth that vanished withing a few minutes, but the remainder was open for 14 hours. This allowed solar winds to stream through the openings and caused strong geomagnetic storms. According to the researchers this occured due to the phenomenon called corotating interaction region from the sun, large scale plasma stranchers that are generated in the lower middle latitude regions due to the interaction of far solar wind streams and surronding slow solar wind. More on their scientific activities over the years can be seen on some videos available on rumble such as: video 1 and video 2

#community_nostr_recapLots of words, but still not clear how this translates to Proton.
If the GrapheneOS devs enjoy the occasional sniff of coke up their nose (or whatever you may find morally repulsive) that does not mean their product is shit and you should stay away from it..
With this stance, pretty much every product on earth can’t be used because everyone has some kind of dirt on their name one way or another…
