i never experienced "almost free" payments with self hosted lightning wallets.
isnt a trusted third party involved in ecash, the mint? and cant the mint create more ecash tokens than they hold satoshis?

the idea is to select people you know and trust as guardians of the federation, so called 2nd party custody model. The mint could issue unbacked by bitcoin tokens but that can be done if 2/3 of the guardians are ok with it
