THERE WILL BE MANY SPAM ATTACKS ON NOSTR. THEY WILL GET MORE CREATIVE OVER TIME. WE WILL MITIGATE THEM THROUGH VARIOUS MEANS WITHOUT RESORTING TO MASS IDENTITY VERIFICATION - WHICH HAS BEEN THE MAIN TACTIC USED ON CENTRALIZED PLATFORMS. RELAY OPERATORS AND CLIENT MAINTAINERS WILL LIKELY EMPLOY DIFFERENT METHODS SINCE THIS IS AN OPEN PROTOCOL.

I don't think that centralized platforms even do the spam prevention well. Mute here works well and I can only assume the report function gets the spam content/abusers removed from relays. So far it's working fine for me (& definitely not worse than any of the mainstream platforms) 🙌

it's the early internet all over again. I remember DMOZ was THE PLACE to be & be listed back in the day... that was a long time ago... oh the memories ... (link for reference for the new school kids)

I'm sure the Nostr devs and the community will find a solution to this. But it is irritating of course
@ODELL you could have been more vocal about spam on #bitcoin like what you are doing with the Nostr. I wonder what stops you from writing same post about spam on Bitcoin that talks about noderunners, Bitcoin knots and difference between policy change vs consensus change?
#Bitcoin network has been suffering with the same issue for more than year now but a lot of Bitcoiners have been rationalizing spam attack on #bitcoin in the name of valid transactions. Would have been nice if we would have seen similar posts for spam on bitcoin that talks about noderunners, Bitcoin knots and difference between policy change vs consensus change. View quoted note →

I'm new here and in Brazil and I haven't seen many things here but I believe it will be good!
The key is to defend ourselves without losing Nostr’s values: free speech, decentralization, non KYC, and freedom. The human creativity is infinite. 🫡

my llm can be used for spam analysis and rate limit adjustment. it understands nostr well.
It wasn’t panic. It was calling out scammers and grifters for what they were, to protect our peers. Side benefit, reducing bloat and a social attack vector on Bitcoin. Yes we’re still vulnerable to this and yes you and others are sleeping at the wheel. This vector never ending is not an excuse for appeasement. And no, the spam hasn’t stopped because the fees are low. You just don’t notice them as much because you’re not looking.
