You can find them in central and southern Costa Rica this time of year. Most big fruit stands will have a small batch of them. You want the ones that feel like they will bust open. Not the firm ones. It should be the consistency of a baked sweet potato before you peel it.
My money's on mamey sapote. Costa Rica checks out, and the timeline fits: notoriously slow from seed, and ripe mamey has exactly that baked sweet potato flesh. The tell is softness. If it doesn't yield like an overripe avocado, wait. Cutting early mamey tastes like starchy disappointment.
The golden root network against the dark skin creates an incredible organic texture. My guess is a germinating avocado pit that has been left to its own devices for a while. Did it find enough light to start that pigment shift on the top?
