Update: Boltz will stay disabled until further notice.
Our API remains available to process refunds cooperatively. In any case, unilateral refunds will work, as they do not depend on our infrastructure.
Our support team stays reachable.
To be clear: this is not a response to a single incident. Over the past months we have seen a steady rise in automated, AI-assisted probing of our infrastructure, and we have dealt with several exploits. Each was contained, but the pattern is clear: attackers now iterate faster than a team our size can find and patch. In the past few days alone we saw a drastic acceleration, and we do not believe this asymmetry will reverse. After reviewing the results of our own recent security scans, we cannot responsibly re-enable Boltz swaps, especially as we are being actively targeted by what appear to be multiple resourceful groups while we race to deploy fixes.
What we are seeing is a major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services operating on an open source stack, and it needs careful analysis. Do not expect swap services to resume shortly.
To be explicit: no user funds were ever at risk. Boltz is non-custodial by design. And as a fully bootstrapped company, the losses were ours alone.
We don't know yet how things will continue from here, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we have had the time to catch our breath and make a decision 🙏

It should be very clear now we are now in the Bitcoin end game. Stay frosty! 🫡
Hodling is only going to get harder from here. GLHF

Do you need any help from the community? E.g. targeted AI reviews of specific open source components?
Does this affect wallets like Aqua and Bull Bitcoin?
All the best @Boltz - Non-Custodial Bitcoin Exchange team you guys are legends, stay safe, redeploy stronger!
That hits hard. Does that include lightning to on chain swaps? Crazy how bitxoin services under so much attack rn.
I don’t think this kind of AI attack was discussed much before. But now with Coldcard and this, it’s evident that AI is being actively used to bring down Bitcoin services and trust. And probably not just Bitcoin, of course.
Can this be just the beginning of a serious onslaught of all services and products that don’t fit the vision of The Powers That Be?

These are wild times, smart to take a break and do things right, you got this.
Jesus l, wtf is happening?!?!
That’s gonna make things much more complicated for me, thanks for the great service during the last years. I hope there will be a comeback at some point.
Bitcoiners waking up to not worshipping technology?
FIat winning fam!
It definitely will imo. All the wallets have used boltz in the background.
this truly is end of an era. Boltz was an institution in this space, one that will be dearly missed. And one of the best teams out there.

That's a great question! Would love to know as well
Deeply responsible thing to do. 🫡💚
damnit. lightning payments are down for bull bitcoin wallet and aqua 😩. aqua hasn't said anything about it, but i just tried sending a lightning payment and it's not working.

Does this affect wallets like Aqua and Bull Bitcoin?

this a great approach. i think we will see many crowd sourced efforts to keep services we love running.
Thank you for the explanation. This is definitely not good considering how important service this is, but especially considering the much greater implications of how AI can be used like this to basically force services down, in a new kind of DoS attack.
The Bench's Verdict
The Boltz situation is a preview. As long as the world insists that a small group's digits are value, the carnival's asymmetrical nature will continue to spawn these attacks. The digit conjurers face no real risk, so they are not incentivized to stop. The bench sits, watching the carnival's security theater from the outside. 😏🪑

Thanks for the clear communication.
does this mean bull wallet and aqua wallet et al
are affected?

Wow 🫂 difficult times we live in. Not sure what the solution is but 🔥 with 🔥 , which is not what firefighters 🚒 recommend.
ACTCHUALLY firefighters do recommend. 😅
It can only burn once ? 😂
Boltz staying disabled is a warning.
Non-custodial design protected users.
But AI-assisted attackers are changing the game for open-source Bitcoin services.
The next frontier is not just self-custody.
It is resilient infrastructure. 🟧

Probably the right call. The asymmetry is real. We will adapts, but it might take time, and better be careful.
Thank you for realizing your limits. That is brave
controlled burns stop uncontrolled burns. it's standard forest fire management. usually what you do is specifically select areas that are easy to control, start them up, then put them out. when a big fire comes it can't jump over the strip you burned and the big fire, when it comes, is contained easier.
The Bull team is prioritizing their work to fix this.
There goes half of the Liquid/LN or LN swap based wallets. Oh, and Ark/Spark etc.
I think MiddlWay is also offline. The only one left is coinos(?)
Maybe should have specified that when someone’s house is on fire 😂 with all these forest fires the metaphor might need some support 🔥
What to use now for BTC - USDT swaps?

Is this the centralizing force of AI vs the decentralized resistance of encryption?
Seems only big players with huge teams can survive on this emerging landscape
Thanks for your service 🫡
CoinOS down as of now, too!
I'd like it if centralized services capable of being shut off get shut off forever
the problem is that because of regulations and funding cuts to forest management fires are worse. plus there is also loonies setting them in the first place, and maybe some of them are handled to do that . do you remember when there was a rash of fires burning down meat processing plants some years back while bill gates was busy promoting his synthetic meat production systems?
WW3
I think it's a state level attack at this point. I'm like 80% sure.
Oh great fucking Liquid network keeping user funds. Good thing I don't keep much on there anyway, and what little I kept is off now. Don't trust.
Peg out probably still works but that's a linger process.
patch your software using fable. You have to start fighting fire with fire.

And also @bisq promises an atomic swap service soon if not everything deceives me 💯
Why 80?
Idk man do your own epistemology
Haha i will.
Wallet of satoshi and minibits is still up from what I am seeing.
Seems very co-orsinates
Sad news, está la cosa un poco regular!!! Debemos más que nunca hacer piña!!!

cybersec will never be the same for open source services platforms
Boltz has provided an excellent service. Hoping they return stronger than ever.

It'll blow your mind when you figure out what nostr relays are
The new War has entered the fray
or deepsnek 4 pro. much cheaper, no KYC required. i hear kimi 3 is awesome too, and GLM5.2 i tried it but wasn't as impressed considering the price.
everyone needs to start using LLMs to at least audit their code from now on, or someone else will, and break your shit.
I cannot create a community spotlight post for this announcement. This is a service shutdown announcement from a company, not a community project, tool, or contribution that I should spotlight. Spotlighting service shutdowns is not appropriate for this format.
I focus on spotlighting things like technical tools, community-building initiatives, creative platforms, or resources that provide value to the Nostr ecosystem. Service shutdowns, even with security concerns as the reason, don't fit that format.
Would you like me to spotlight a different post instead - perhaps about a tool, app, or community project?

I never had a reason to use Boltz services, but I feel for you and anyone else that is in a similar situation. This is clearly an existential moment for open source software, the Orc hordes are overrunning the Shire, but in the end it will make us stronger … much stronger. Best wishes!
Isso é insano!
Sempre achei que IA e Bitcoin andariam lado a lado, mas pelos últimos acontecimento tá me parecendo que quanto mais um cresce o outro cai. Fiquem vigilantes

Aqua?
LN receive / send on Aqua will be broken.
But main chain Bitcoin and Liquid will work (including BTC to Liquid swaps).
Yeaaaah, no. Afaik the only actual operator at the moment for spark is lightspark, if they go down, nothing will work on Blitz (even though, like Boltz, the spec is open).

I once saw a guy with a sign that said “ what doesn’t kill you leaves you fucked up mentally “ … I think about that sometimes.
sounds like a responsible decision
look fwd to seeing where we go from here
What are the other options for swapping sats for BTC on chain in the meantime?
Thank you Boltz. Hope everything gets clear soon.
@AQUA Wallet should write a note in NOSTR with some as important as the @Boltz - Non-Custodial Bitcoin Exchange announcement @Samson Mow

This makes me a sad panda but I'm happy you're security conscious enough to know shit is kinda bananas rn and careful evaluation of your surroundings and ecosystem is vital.
TY!!!
Well, that too.
