I think the issue is that humans differentiate and join tribes. We saw how far tribalism took half the country when they were pushing to lock up people that didn't vax, get a vax card, or did their own research. They actively avoided any opinions that were not provides by their masters....yep 2+2=5

Maybe we also need more hardship in life to filter out who's worth his salt and who is not. Its easier to tell, who the cowards are when the barbarians are at the gate and your little village has to fend for themselves.
This easy life makes it possible that noone, not even oneself gets put to the test enough or regularly. Thats convinient, but the price is to find out when something bad happens that noone can ignore.

The thing that's really disappointed me about Dystopian Sci Fi from HG Wells, Yevgeny Zamyatin and Aldous Huxley to Margaret Atwood and the Wachowskis is that these were all supposed to be warnings. Instead they so captivated our imaginations that we thought they were prophetic.
They AREN'T.
We are the future. We can make it what WE want. Bitcoin and Nostr are the Enlightenment 2.0, bringing us out of the NeoLiberal dark ages.
My kids and grandkids will be free from dystopia. They will read about you in their history classes. They will think about the IMF like we thought about the politicians who mandated men swinging lanterns in front of the first motorcars. They will wonder what we were so worried about because they won't even be able to imagine the hellscape we prevented.

This is true up until the point that action is needed in the public sphere, rather than only in what we control in our own lives.
How much time and energy does it take to accurately categorize everything?
In my experience not much time.
It may be work at the start ( but added benefit of stopping and briefly internally categorizing also slows you down, gives time for introspection and helps you develop awareness) as you keep assessing your level of control in daily life situations it becomes intuitive to you with practice. ( this does not have to be academic, it can be an internal process and intuitive in nature)
Once you discern your level of control in any situation it can guide your decision making and allocating time/energy to what is useful action.
