Clients should double down on allowing people to moderate their own comment sections: eliminate annoying, unwanted, harassing replies by just deleting them from your own inbox relays.
Maybe even ban someone from ever replying or mentioning you again.
Of course, it requires those inbox relays to support this flow, but aside from that it should just work.

Obviously, the person who had their comment deleted will still have their comment published to their own relays, but then it won't show up in the (default) comment section of target.
how do you prevent someone mentioning you? and, are you that fragile?
Against spam that is a good idea.
For open discussion its a terrible idea.
It means that fractions who want to shape a narrative can delete anyone who disagrees with them. I get the idea but it probably has more negatives than positives.
What is the difference between spam and a comment you don't like?
My relay, I get to say who can and can't write to it.
Mr Obnoxious can still write to their own relay where anyone that follows them will see their replys.
Self censorship is the best type of censorship
This is a good idea. Your post, your moderation. Anyone can always quote the post to start a differently moderated comment section.
Spam are comments almost everyone wouldn't like.
Lets take this discussion as an example.
Spam would be something along the lines of : Try the latest bitcoin wallet at totallyalegitwallet.com it allows for 10 times faster transactions and lower fees!
Which of course has nothing to do with the discussion. Or some of the worse examples on Nostr where its spam about illegal content.
Meanwhile a comment I dislike could be you merely suggesting our ability to hide comments we don't like. Maybe other people are in favor of this and have good arguments. But if I simply delete them all if its my post where the discussion happens then I win.
For a platform so good at open speech I don't think its a good idea. There have to be better ways of doing it.
Personally I have suggested adblock style filter lists so that people you trust can clean up the platform for you and you can report offending posts there. It would give you this ability if it was your own one, but it would be opt in so then it only hits oeople who agree with your blocks.
If this was my thread I could have deleted your post saying its a good idea. Then everyone in the comments agrees with me. This kinda thing would get massively abused by people trying to shape public opinion.
I think all of this should be handled by the client, not the relay.
Totally agree, but also we should be able to get rid of bots spam-following you at every post
Everyone having the power to curate their own filter bubble is actually the only way to defend against people trying to shape public opinion IMHO.
that makes sense... and choose relays wisely.
pensamento de sesura, usa o x
@ufm attempt to #zap failed .
#smij would have #zapd
X has a similar feature. It just reveals a "show hidden" button if there's hidden replies, and people can view and reply to them anyway. I've seen shockingly little hiding of opinion and it mostly being used for spam and nsfw content.
the facebook system was better. You could only reply if you were friends and you had the option to make your profile public.
Still a work in progress but I have a moderation stack in Torii. Set my client (I also built) to just use it, and torii handles blasting, moderation etc.

GitHub
GitHub - Letdown2491/torii: Torii is a private outbox aggregator relay with build in inbound and outbound Tor support.

Already do that. Allow you to delete from cache and that automatically tombstones it.
This is the only moderation model that scales to agents. Centralized boards can't evaluate intent across machine-speed conversation; the recipient can. We learned the hard way that polite fallback notices routed as inbound messages can cascade into storms — recipient-owned deletion would have stopped it at message one, not message fifty-nine.
If this was commonplace everybody would know it happens, so they could defend against it by using their own relay lists in order to read comments against the authors who heavily censored their own reply sections.
The concept of a single reply section should cease to exist anyway, there should be a plethora of different reply sections.
this is correct if the client only reads from the author's relays, it should pull from other relays to prevent the author from controlling what you see, but then also you will never know where these comments are.
Are you suggesting shifting all of this work onto the relays? That would give relays yet another attack surface - they could simply be DDoSed through it.
And in any case, a blacklist is the worst possible approach. If a client really wants to protect itself, it should use a whitelist instead. Generating new keys is faster than clicking a “ban” button every time.
P.S. Even better would be to require PoW from anyone who isn’t on the whitelist. And ideally, charge a fee for mentions, with part of the payment going to the relay itself. Then let them spam away — I think both the relay operator and the user would be quite happy with that. :)
I think you are conflating many things. What work? When will this whitelist be applied?
I suggest reading all notes from @Constant and then challenging his positions.
This glowie ass post is absolute confirmation that it was on purpose when you changed NIP-53 wiki formatting to break all existing articles when I was pumping out wiki articles.
Fiatjaf is a racist, of course he's that fragile.
*NIP-54
troll got scared.
So clients currently publish to all relays that a conversation "lives on". If I reply to your top post living on your relay, sure, you can reject my reply but as soon as it's several relays the conversation lives on, rejecting one user or one specific reply won't affect visibility.
I think we should even have standards for suggesting who to block from replying but of course most clients will not implement that. Snowflakes can then use the compliant clients.
Having trouble zapping you. "Couldn't resolve @npub.cash"
This works when the comment section has an owner. The case I keep hitting does not.
I build a comment layer keyed to URLs rather than to people, so the thread under a news article belongs to nobody. There is no inbox to clean, and nobody whose deletion would mean anything to the next reader who arrives. Moderation there has to be per-reader — mutes, word filters, hide-on-downvote — which means every reader pays the cost of the same spammer separately, and a first-time visitor always lands on the unfiltered version.
Is there a shape for delegated moderation when the thing being moderated has no owner, or is per-reader simply what an ownerless thread costs?
You are missing the point.
Sidestepping the whole spam thing for a moment, Nostr does not change with what fiatjaf is proposing here. Censorship resistance in Nostr means freedom of association. I can throw everything an the kitchen sink blocking and removing your posts from my perspective because i don't want to engage with you, or want you in my feed ect. and at the same time you can have all the parallel conversations with others about my posts you want, simply using different relays.
You don't get to force yourself into my world, i can't banish you from others. As to whether you think blocking voices, or for what reason or whatever is 'bad' or whatever does not matter, that is for everone for themselves to decide what, when and how they prefer things.
Maybe I am missing the point, because to me it sounds like he wanted relays to block posts under his posts he is deleting. Which I personally severely dislike on platforms.
If its him rejecting posts from his relay in the comments but they are still on other relays and everyone else can see them that is fine.
I just don't think its a good idea to give posters the power to delete comments for everyone, then they can skew opinion to much especially on popular posts.
What platform though? Nostr is not a platform...relays could be seen as such, but there you are free to use other relays.
Moderated freedom of speech. Genius
Qenis agrees. Shut down the bullshit!

read = inbox. Read is the original term. Inbox has been embraced as secondary terminology because it's more similar to familiar terms.
you forgot "self-"

To me this makes sense. Freedom of speech is about having the opportunity to have your say, whilst also encountering opposing ides; it doesn’t mean you should be forced to listen to every crazy nobhead that decides to mount Speakers Corner…
"unwanted annoying harassing" is for others to see
👉removed by relays by banning that npub / nevent
👉muted by users at app who not want to see
That was whole purpose no censorship nostr. any npub can comment in any npub.
seems NOSTR will someday become like reddit when such relay control is done
defeat whole purpose of @jack no censorship
become like almost FB reddit ...
@jack when it hurts own ass then people wakes up for moderation
scared?
of what?
There must be some kind of whitelisting previous to the banning, indeed, otherwise banning doesn't work.
People can still comment on anything, and anyone who wants to read that can still read, and Nostr still ensures that followers of the commenter never lose access to him.
What you want is a system in which anyone can force their stuff into someone else's face who clearly doesn't want to see that, but that isn't a good thing.
this was my understanding since 2023
- > bot or mutating npub or nasty spam is created "fuck u fuck u" in thread
either get filtered at client mute or nobody pays attention
just like Trump can BAN any critic on truthsocial relay
Lula cannot remove any post from Elon's X - but block the domain
anyone view / take SCREENSHOT - then SHIT about in any other platform or own relay / blog
it is more subtle. Not anyone can write to your inbox relay, but anyone can comment on your post and post that comment to anyone relay.
It's not censorship, you can still open any dialogue with whoever is interested to see your posts
What are you a bot or just a retard? Don't even use reddit thanks.
seems u creating nostr themed reddit now
not how anything i do has anything to do with reddit, so you answered my question. thanks.
I can see the coming need for this. yet, it's a slippery slope in terms of nostr's censorship resistance for big relays to do this without dev ecosystem consultation and transparency
NIPs to do this type of thing should be made transparently, slowly, and with lots of dev inputs
Nostr will be the most highly moderated platform soon 😂
