The hard truth is that people are tired of social media in general. And if we keep onboarding them into Twitter-like interfaces we will keep losing them. Somebody will come up with something better than this and I hope they do it soon. We need some brand new ideas not just recycled UIs.

Interesting, I think that you are right, if I think of me, I am less interested in socials, I use them only for getting info's on specific themes. Maybe some new system is necessary.
I don't know if people still like them.. I am definitely phasing out of them for 4 months or so.. we might be too late to catch any wave from that.

I always thought that stories are useless. I never understood how people likes them.

I have ideas but no skill to code them and no money to hire people and no dev friends. sigh
And yet hundreds of millions of people use them every day. Perfect for sharing in the moment temporary stuff without it cluttering your main feed or gallery

I noticed that bitchat is probably the most active Nostr community right now precisely BECAUSE it is markedly different.

Fully agree. They are just different mediums for data consumption. Ones I see as relevant to Nostr: - Microblogging - Articles - Short-form video - Long-form video - Long-form Audio - Organization platform - Market platform - Code platform - Game distribution / Game identity platform
I remember telling you similar ideas, but who knows what apps humans need in the end, maybe I was wrong and they need non, tired of everything
X sucks because it's full of bots and spam and it's not possible to get rid of them because X was designed for bots and spam. Nostr is too much like X that's why people will continue to come and go from Nostr. The solution is to make it more like Facebook, because people love Facebook and it's still the king of social media. I'm talking about the ability to have private profiles and public profiles where you need to friend request because they are allowed to interact with your profile posts, that way spammers and bots can't get through. On nostr it should be required to pay in order to send friend/follow requests. This way it will get rid of spam. That is the only solution. It's a big job, but I'm sure eventually nostr will head into that direction. Nostr is fine as it is now. Most people in the world don't want to use social media unless it's a more personal group of friends and family. Most don't want to talk to other people online. I'm not worried. Nostr will eventually win.
Kind of disagree. We really don't know what a decentralized microblogging platform that truly gains traction in society is going to look like. Mastodon is the closest example and, say what you will, it still has ~500k DAUs. How much of the objection to microblogging based on the peculiarities of this form of media VS what it has become in the light of 10 years of corporate-driven enshittification?
Are people tired of "blogging"? People seem to want to speak to each other on the internet. What's the best way to do that?

True. Maybe I'm not understanding them well. And I also never used them. Surely I'm not one of the millions of people using them 😁

i for one appreciate the ephemeral nature of stories. its what ppl are doing now, today. i rarely care about someone’s historical tweets
So if I follow 10,000 friends who all use 4 relays in their outbox my client must connect to 40,000 relays and fetch + deduplicate events from each relay individually to guarantee completeness and consistency? That's retarded. Why don't we look at Pubky and observe how homeservers sync with indexers (on a centralized platform)? Why does nostr not replicate this? Users of outbox can opt to sync data to a platform who can index it on their behalf. Like sharing content. A novel concept. Why has nostr bastardized this so hard when otherwise things work decently well? The current ethos sucks ass. No I don't feel free as a developer on nostr. I could always just do things.
Is this really more of a deeper issue? We’re working under the constraints of mobile screens Until touch screens become a thing of the past, replaced by a more flexible, interactive medium, social media will just stay stuck in the familiarity of Twitter/forum-like interfaces It’s 2026. Where tf are holograms and NerveGear tech??

BYOA - bring your own algorithm. Market place of open source algorithms to implement. People low key love the β€œfor you” and explore pages. The issue is that they’re predatory and manipulative.

Nostr is designed from the get-go to have limited reach just like Bitcoin is designed from the get-go to be volatile.

Check out Wavves on the zap store. Its a fun way to discover new content. V2 coming soon.
Check out Bitsocial, its federated nor uses relays. Its content-addressable and much closer to BitTorrent in its design. All users seed by default, nodes run on cheap hardware, and each community represented by a keypair so no need to trust a relay/server
I'd still love to see people adopt the GPS enabled local focused notes you've got in Amethyst. The problem is we're all such privacy maxis we balk at the idea of sharing location πŸ˜†. That said being able to locate local people to connect with is one of the allures of Club Orange, and was one of the key things that made dialup BBS's a different experience than Internet platforms (or protocols!). I don't see a great way to square the circle on privacy and location, aside from people just deciding that it's worth it though. Maybe there's something like subkeys and a weird handshake protocol or something with far more clever cryptography than I've got a grasp on. But I've long thought local-first platforms are a great way to step back from the mayhem. More than ever in the era of AI slop.
Forums to go deep into topics. With wiki functionality. With categories functionality and then mapping user's categories to other users and groups categories. Then the ability to form concentric circles of contacts. Be able o prioritise what is read and have a good recommendation engine of what to read next. The idea is to be able to offer more and more content and to have people reading for more and more time.

Exactly dude. I just don't value social media like this. (I do value video platforms tho). It's cool to come on here every once in a while to see the top posts, but I only care about the other uses of Nostr.

And it's FULL of shameless AI art too.
I often think about that and after all I think this kind of interaction will stay forever . Especially little thoughts like you just did giving the need to answer , not especially debate , just participate . I don’t know the psychology behind this but it’s really strong .
I feel Nostr is more about building connections and community, then being just a creator or influencer. It’s much more about interacting and sharing truly who we are, then trying to be seen by playing a roll πŸ’•
Yeah, that’s my impression as well. When I look at Instagram, everyone is posting stories both creators and just normal people that I know
Communities are build by a bunch of individual authentic creators. A creator is truly who you are. A node full of creativity and power. You create reality with your imagination. Your friends on Nostr are here to build and celebrate with you! πŸ’œ
Your are right! We are all creators. I was more referring to the modern social media creators who build an artificial superficial illusion about who they are…but not actually engaging from their heart.
Absolutely... Where there are people, there is and will be noise! But for those of us who are genuinely driven by the desire to connect, create community, inspire, and cultivate real conversations and relationships, a huge advantage lies in the fact that on Nostr, we have to create our own algorithm. We decide who we follow, who we interact with, and what we want to see in our feeds. Most toxic social media junkies won't have the patience for that, as they're used to being trapped and controlled by that algorithm.
You won't believe but people are happy with twitter style cause they like to meme and shitpost.

I second this. Lemmy style (Reddit clone) communities/groups are what still work, plus VoIP/chat for family&friends. The unified UI is the future, so the unified self-hosted app for blog, notes, chat, ... In a single package.
Stories are trash. But just speaking for myself, I did come here to escape the enshittification of Twitter, and there has yet to be a single Nostr client that has fully delivered on the promise of having a better user experience.

Exactly the opposite. People want a social media experience with the real advantages of Nostr. They don't want never ending baloney about BTC. Once that got in the grasp of whales, it was game over for mere mortals. Unless you got in prior to 2018, preferably before.
Positively reinforce the feeling gained from the retention of wisdom. Use current social hierarchical conventions to turn the INTJ’s into the new influencers. Said differently; make people who can critically think the new influencers by showing off how they think.
I love X because we get live news from the ground as it's happening. Unfortunately, the incentive payments have flooded the algorithm with bots engagement farming. I think I've blocked over 1000 people to clean up my timeline. On Nostr I've blocked "Bitcoin" and "zaps" and my timeline is deserted.

I agree, I've known plenty of people who just stopped using social media all together. Not much I can do to onboard them.

What people don't get is that many on nostr don't care if it grows. Few... remember.
Brand new idea:
inkan's avatar inkan
The way it usually goes, your online identity is your private key. If the key is compromised, there goes your identity. Inkan fixes that. You keep a master key in cold storage and a signing key for everyday use. If the signing key ever leaks or gets lost, the master revokes it and delegates to a new one. Same identity, same followers, fresh signing key. If you'd like to take a look at the prototype: https://www.inkan.cc. Log in with your NIP-07 extension and say hi to the test identities already walking around. Or make one of your own.

Partly for sure, early adopters are like that. But not everything early birds gets is going to be good, otherwise everyone would do that. A lot of people are looking for a familiarity. If they are the ones that nostr benefit from onboarding? That I don't know.
