Thought we were talking about all clients. Whoops.

Maybe keep the events for 24hours. Should teach users a lesson, they still get onboarding and saves you on cost.
Curious, could the relay run within these resource limits? Shape: VM.Standard.A1.Flex OCPU count: 4 Network bandwidth (Gbps): 4 Memory (GB): 24 Local disk: Block storage only (200GB) If so, OCI free-forever option will cost you $0 per month to host.
OCI has a free-forever offering. I've been using since 2022 to host a BTCPAY server instance. Check into it. I've yet to pay any hosting fees.
Make purple users sponsors of their personal follows. Make your relay accessible for purple, their follows and their follows. Only direct follows can write. 500/month is nothing. You only need 100 to pay 5 to break even.
I'm paying for relays and love how Amethyst reminds me to do so. If my follows would be made aware that they are being sponsored by me, wouldn't that incentivize more people to sponsor their folliws? I bet it would.

I would like an update button on each column if that is possible or if that is already there please point me to it, thanks.
most users don't think about which relay is eating their events. the protocol is open by design. from an investment angle, the data walks in the door on its own.
The open protocol is the point, you can simply download all events from the Damus relay (over time due to rate limits)… Will is right that nobody would buy it, it’s already free data by design.
I was tempted to ask you about hosting it as I would love to validate my idea about "sponsoring your follows" but I don't have the capacity to develop such a product right now. But there should be many angles by which a relay could be profitable. Think status, not features. Right now, those running free relays are the heroes but sponsoring them doesn't give me status. They get the status and I can mostly silently give them a thank-you zap but that's it. You could also give each paying customer a limited list of others they want to sponsor, with a promise to reward those who get multiple sponsorships with ways to give those on. Make it relevant to users and people will want it. Make the purple user publicly inform his sponsored accounts to get advertisement.
promise upkeep for a year and I'll purchase a year of purple... also how much are you paying a year? can you just not use self-hosted solutions to potentially make this work?
all my servers cost about 500 per month and rising. damus relay is like $250 per month. I just have very little room for extra expenses because i have to pay $16,000 per month for the next 10 years for child+spousal support. I don’t even have income for myself anymore after this even with a high paying job. I’m basically fucked. So no a few subscriptions is not going to undrown me
That and my mortgage without any other expenses is like 21k a month. So I’m basically living in poverty now to pay for her to drink wine and have a nice life. Yay living.
Only takes one good year to get slapped with a bigass payment. Depends on the state a lot. Source: worked with guys who could knock down 250+ one year and 60 the next, and were shitty at being a human and/or shitty at judging a human.
This is actually true, which makes one wonder how "unstoppable" and "censorship resistant" nostr really is if a regime decides to block only 3-4 of these popular relays. #asknostr ?
It is pretty resistent, not neccesarily for the existing content but things get mirrored pretty far and anyone can put up a replacement. Loosing big relays would be super unfortunate but other replacements would just become big instead. Ideally nostr is more p2p though.
Do you know why? Because I wonder if its possible to do it on a budget. I have been gameserver hosting for years without accepting money. My gameserver runs on a $30 vps since I can only use a single core anyway. Depending on your needs you may be able to cut this down severely. Already linked a comparison site I use to find deals on another post.

Oracle cloud’s free tier is perhaps the greatest act of Jewish charity towards the goyim in history. We should all show support for Larry Ellison. Currently using one with nomachinenx to run all the desktop software I don’t trust enough to put on my main machine. I officially declare Larry a schutzjuden and will personally exclude him from any future pogroms
I saw larry in person in vegas. he's weird. everyone working in oracle cloud customer support needs to be thrown in a plastic chipper. pray that your shit doesn't get flaky and you never need to contact them.

I don’t expect support and don’t keep any data I can’t afford to lose on something I don’t pay any money for, it is a scratch machine for trash

if 4 cpus is pushing it then reduce the total load. how about taking the list of npubs that are purple subscribers, and scraping their follows? This is now the truncated list of people that can publish to the damus relay.
I don't know Larry, but it's seems all CEO's of large corps are a little off normal (whatever that is). Let's not forget that Oracle is one of the few corps that didn't mandate the COVID jab. My experience with Oracle support is a positive one.

Okay. Maybe you can get a couple friends to make oracle accounts and have 3 free tiers, then roundrobin them through a haproxy on a $5 unlimited bw VPS in some jurisdiction that doesn’t care about abuse reports. Then you just need some kind of script to make sure that posts to any single backend relay get rebroadcast to the others. Is something like this viable?
