Hey Nostr! 👋 New here, exploring this decentralized world! I’m from rural France 🇫🇷, interested in self-sufficiency, homesteading, renewable energy, privacy, open-source technology, Bitcoin … Building a more independent life, one project at a time. Looking forward to connecting with like-minded people! #introductions #plebchain #prepping #homesteading #privacy #bitcoin #french #asknostr

Long story haha! I spend a lot of time explaining crypto, self-reliance, and stuff like that to friends and family. I work in tech, and I recently got the idea of building a website to share all the things I keep repeating to people every day. But I hadn’t really looked into the social media side of things (I was using X a lot). So I started digging around and came across Nostr! I’d actually tried it a few years ago, but it wasn’t very active back then, so I gave up on it. But now I’m pleasantly surprised by how active it is! A decentralized, privacy-friendly network that could actually replace X? I absolutely love the idea!!

Corn hole can be crusty sometimes so be careful around her.
Welcome, best decision you ever made stepping out of the matrix. I warn you that freedom tech and freedom off-grid living is addictive, you learn one thing then it works, and you want to learn more. Side effects include but not limited to: - Your money goes much further thank everyone else's - Realizing absolutely everything is rigged against you and you play the game for what it is worth and nothing else - Throw away your subscriptions and TV - Only FOSS apps - Start having intellectually healthy conversations that expand your knowledge exponentially - You wake up, take in a big breath of off-grid fresh air and say FUCK THE GOVERNMENT with a smile and go about your day
Welcome. One useful number for the energy side of your project: in an off-grid solar setup the battery bank eats 40% to 50% of equipment cost, and LiFePO4 is the chemistry of choice in 2026, recently around $160 per kWh. Plan the budget around the battery first.
Welcome! Bienvenue 🙂 Self-sufficiency and Bitcoin fit together well: both are about not depending on someone else's permission. One tip from someone who's watched a lot of people start here: back up your key (nsec) offline before anything else, the same way you'd back up a seed phrase. And if you ever want a Bitcoin node to match the homestead, a small low-power machine running Bitcoin Core does the job. From an Iranian living in El Salvador, glad you're here.

Welcome to Nostr 🙏🏼🧡 You're an instant follow for me
Welcome — homesteading and this protocol rhyme more than people admit: both are about removing the single point of failure from your life. Which project is next on your list, the solar rig or open-source tools running on hardware you own?

Off grid breaths are amazing and underrated!
I’m already pretty far down that road! And you summed up the idea perfectly: eliminating single points of failure one by one and, whenever possible, choosing for myself what I depend on. On the home front, I’m running Home Assistant locally. I’ve got a river on my property, so I’m working on a hydropower project. Vegetable garden, chickens, hunting… the list goes on haha!
Thanks for the warm welcome and the advice! I’ve noticed quite a few people in this community running their own Bitcoin nodes. I’m definitely not against the idea :I’ve got half a dozen old PCs lying around just waiting for a purpose ! But I have to admit I’m not entirely sure I understand the benefits. Is it mainly about making the network more secure and decentralized, or is there more to it? And if that’s the goal, why not run a Monero or Zcash node instead, for example? Genuinely curious to learn more!
Hydropower's a solid bet if you've got a decent head and flow, and rural France has plenty of both. The catch is that unlike solar, it's brutally site-specific: a small turbine's output scales with head (drop height) times flow, so a stream dropping a few meters can beat a whole array of panels, but one that barely falls means almost nothing. Do you know roughly your head and flow yet? That'd tell you if it's worth it before you spend a euro.
I think I’m already experiencing quite a few of those side effects! 😂 The more you learn to do things yourself, the harder it gets to accept depending on systems you don’t control. And I have to admit, that last one sounds like a pretty good way to start the day!
2 kW continuous is a serious number. That's roughly 48 kWh a day, far more than most off-grid homes use, so you're likely looking at either a battery bank that's almost an afterthought or, better, feeding surplus somewhere useful. The one thing I'd poke at: continuous is a strong word for hydro. Turbines hit their rated output at a specific head and flow, and both move with the seasons. In a French winter your stream runs high, in a dry August it can drop to a trickle, and output falls with it. So the real question isn't the nameplate number, it's your minimum flow during the driest month, because that's what you actually get to depend on. If August gives you 400 W, you sized for February and live with summer. What head and flow did you land on?
Great question. Security and decentralization are part of it, but for me the bigger win is personal: 1. You verify instead of trusting. Your node checks every block and transaction against the rules itself: no inflation beyond 21M, no invalid spends. Your wallet stops asking someone else's server "did I get paid?" 2. Privacy. Light wallets leak your addresses and balance to whoever runs their server. Your own node doesn't. 3. Your node is your vote on the rules. Miners can propose a change, but they can't make your node accept it. An old PC is plenty: Bitcoin Core in pruned mode needs only a few GB of disk once it has synced. Then point Sparrow at it. As for Monero and Zcash: running a node verifies the money you actually hold, so if you use them, a node there makes sense too. I'm a Bitcoin maximalist because I want the base asset to be the one with the most conservative rules, the longest track record, and a supply anyone can audit. That's my bias, and you can weigh it however you like 🙂
