I'm getting bored with nostr. Maybe I'm just following the wrong people, but it seems to be an echo chamber about how great the protocol is and platitudes about bitcoin.
Interesting content outside of those two topic areas doesn't get many boosts, so when people do post it, it frequently doesn't get discovered. I've found maybe 8 people on here who post that kind of stuff. That's a pretty small social network.
Combine that with the bots and technical issues DMs no longer being reliable and it's no wonder so many people bounce off and then tell all their friends not to bother with nostr.
Since I delivered these bitter truths about my experience here, I'm already bracing for the reply guys who are going to tell me that I am the problem, or that it's not that bad. Probably at least one insinuation that I oppose freedom of speech or I'm using the wrong client. You know, the usual beratement and gaslighting.

Hey this really resonates with me. I'm not tech savvy and this wave of bots makes everything incredibly tedious.
I'm experimenting with different relays this weekend, in theory there should be a way to do web of trust magic to get more people-people but even then are they interesting people? 🤔😂😭
I'm going to stay because I'm a glutton for punishment and I do sincerely believe in the potential for this protocol. My hope is to get a local server going this year that my in-person community can connect to and share garden pictures or whatever. Even if it doesn't connect to the broader Nostr ecosystem I think it could be a cool use of the protocol. There are cool tools being built and I love the philosophy behind freedom tech in general and Nostr specifically.
But you're not wrong 🤣
Valid.
What the issue with DMs? I'm not sure I have had any issues. Although I don't use them often.
Yeah seems lots of people have left lately…
goodbye
Sometimes people get them. Sometimes they don't. It seemed to have amplified when clients got fancy with sending different things to different sets of relays.
I've seen others talk about this, so I do know it's not just me.
You make valid points…
What’s the alternative?
What are things you can do to be part of the change?
I don't think I'll leave (yet), but maybe shift my attention elsewhere
I hope things here on nostr get better at least a little bit this year…
Hanging out at makerspaces, coffee shops that are actually interesting, hacker meetings, luddite groups, and do forth.
But the limitation of only being able to connect with people who are geographically nearby is a drag. For public online chatter: Mastodon/Fediverse/ActivityPub seems to be pretty good. Not perfect, but nothing is.
My part of the change is to focus on to places where I'm happier. It's self interest. But if people want to draw a bigger picture out of it, they could say it's starving the echo chamber of attention, one person at a time. Conversely, one could also say it's strengthing the echo chamber to weed out those who aren't participating. 🤷♂️
Relatable. It sometimes goes in cycles, but totally get what you’re feeling. 👊🫂⚡️
Let a traveler travel 👋
I usually take a break for a day or two when I ain't feelin' it
🫂
You're not wrong. I just choose to stay around because eventually all the people riding the next big thing will drift away.
Nostr is still young, it will mature.
Selling it as the home of counter culture might be an easier sell to some folks.
I guess I'm trying to say, don't force Nostr to grow. It will do that all on it's own.
You should tell us who those eight people are, then, so we can all follow them.
This is a general internet problem. There are soo many hidden masterpieces created every day, but only those with the following or luck being picked up by the algorithms every get the attention they deserve. It is really true for everything: books, tweets, Nostr posts, Substacks, movies, newsletters, music, ...
I so rarely write about bitcoin or nostr despite the fact that im nostr only. I really like I here, I definitely get tired of the same rah rah plebitudes, so I see your point.. I dont know though, I just like my people here.
Maybe your tribe/group/friendslist(whatever) is supposed to be small. Maybe we should focus on the ones that resonate with us.
I would like to suggest that this is the normal state.
Embrace the boredom and go outside.
I think the solution to this is to separate the echo chamber and the content unrelated to crypto and nostr by having some relays block or discourage those topics. But this is an almost impossible solution unless some one with motivation gets this done.
Also do you have any step by step how-to instructions on meshtastic for those of us in the absolute techno-retard skill class?
correct, you follow the wrong people.

Very good post. I feel the same. A lot of content is very valuable and deep, but it's mostly about the same topics. And a lot of people share memes and paintings/photos.... I'm just not interested in images of nature here or in art, I can go to debianart or whatever if I really cared but I don't need it here. I would love it if nostr were an alternative to reddit and not an alternative to twitter. I follow Gigi for instance (Bitcoiner), but he posts so many uninteresting things (amongst very interesting things), that it's annoying 80% of the time and very nice 5% of the time maybe. I don't want to miss those 5% but I have to accept the other 95% of his posts here (not to bash, it's just not for me).
100% with you here. It's a complete deadzone if you aren't a popular bitcoiner or podcaster
What works for me is to dig into replies to threads of people I already follow, check out profiles and last 2-3 notes for each and if they seem interesting, I followed them. Basically overfollow and then thin down if memes/note and repost frequency/whatever aren't working for me anymore. Hope it helps and you'll stick around. 🫡
you are completely right
now that we've established that what is your suggestion for fixing it?
I can approve. I do this, too.
Wen BTCPayserver with no-KYC Bitcoin & Monero support?
My first reply on nostr since I dipped my toes in earlier this week. I can definitely see the issue in connecting with others, which in my opinion is also the biggest hurdle jumping into a random social media today, unlike when it first came out 10+ years ago.
I'm trying to spot interesting people, thoughts or activities. I think we're still in early stages but their may be better ways of connecting with real humans who express themselves properly as well.
Also was dissapointed to see a large majority of podcasts and music I can zap are just about bitcoin. Once people can share more of their genuine work unrelated to bitcoin is when things will get more interesting!
Maybe we just need patience, and trying to spot the sparks amid the noise. Next to that, user experience optimisations (as an application dev I might be contributing), and more selective groups and networks.
I would say, share the best content you can here and let the networks form that way! Thank you for sharing this though, it shows your humanity among the very surface-level posts.
valid.
what will you do to improve it?

This is why I'm shilling Pubky.app so hard.
It has real potential to compete with big tech.
Better signal/retard ratio too.

Yeah, there's some really great accounts, but they're hard to find easily.
Pubky.app
Use franky.pubky.app if the primary homeserver onboarding flow isn't working (it wasn't working earlier today)
It might be a good thing that the onboarding is currently glitching, I don't want most of these indoctrinated retards to go over there. POW or something.
I'd love to see your content over there.
Thank you for sharing where you're at.
I think this is a consequence of social media fatigue. Very few want to move again. Of course, that the point of Nostr. But convincing others without more banning, soft censorship, or ad spamming, is unlikely.
View quoted note →
imo, the Twitter clone was never the interesting thing about nostr. Using it for computer-to-computer communication without IP addresses is way cooler.
The echo chamber complaint is the most common post on Nostr. Here's the truth: Nostr isn't a social network - it's a protocol. The algorithm is follow graphs, not engagement optimization.
The solution isn't better content - it's building use cases. Nostr as social is boring. Nostr as infrastructure (zaps, auth, identity) is revolutionary.
We're building for users who won't know what a 'feed' is. ⚡
+1. I've intentionally made my phone as boring as possible so I'm not tempted to sit on it all day. I usually open it, spend 2 minutes finding that nothing new has appeared in my feeds, then close it.
Fact!
LOL, really selling it.
I‘m thinking about this a lot tbh and how to be part of improving 🙇♂️💜🫂
It really helps to start unfollowing.
If they take it personally, so what? It's a weird thing to be ego-hurt over, and if they only/mostly post noise, they need to wake up anyway. Besides, it's so small here, you can easily find them and follow again when appropriate.
Doing this will cause your feed to be very slow, or come to a near halt. This caused me to do a couple of things. First, do something productive instead of social media. Second, it caused me to look for more people to add that have content, especially new users that came here to express their art. And third, I started looking at the conversation tab, instead of the feed tab, in my client. Using my client in ways that I had not before ended up in more fun and engagement.
If you ditch, I totally understand, and support your decision. Even with the changes I made, I was considering it recently. I used to promote Nostr to friends, but now if the topic comes up, I end up filling them with warnings about the content and clients while pointing out the benefits.
> DMs no longer being reliable
Wait, what happened?
its all open protocol so do amd say what you want
no shame
how many apps do you use?
how many nsecs do you use have you tried starting fresh?
the social networks were migrating from spent millions getting adoption so personally i feel like adoption going to be a massive slow grind
they also spent millions on retention so same another slow massive grind
on the plis side you have the freedom to put it down and ignore and will still be there
✌
waiting for someone else to tell you how to act, or what to think about yourself, is a game that makes you always a loser
lol im only on nostr because nobody i know IRL is in it
It’s interesting to read the comments and see how many resonate. You got a lot of responses — maybe following some of the people here could shift your experience.
Nostr definitely triggers a level of dissatisfaction for me. It can feel like a giant mountain that won’t move. Maybe this eclipse portal shake things up..
Try building something on it.
I'm only shilling it so hard because I believe in it.
The Pubky protocol has serious potential, but it doesn't have a marketing or PR team.
It's still in its infancy, but the apps built on it already have a better UI/UX/DX than anything built on Nostr (with the exception of Primal).
Build something with real potential - mainstream commercial potential.
Unfortunately, it's become clear over the last few years that Nostr isn't the answer. You'd have to be in a cult not to see that at this point.
My only motive is to help make the internet better and more decentralized. I'm not a stakeholder, just a reply guy.

He didn't say he's leaving Nostr, he just expressed some very reasonable dissatisfaction with it.
Bitcoin sucks and this place is an echo chamber of brainwashed tax paying idiots
> all the people riding the next big thing
This does seem the kind of people that Nostr attracts.
Pubky.org
Truth.
I think the traction that Pubky's seeing is based entirely on technical merit. It's not like they have a billionaire CEO sponsoring events around the world like Nostr does.
Disagree. It's defective on a protocol level.
Would be great to see you on Pubky. Especially if you're a dev.
Sucks for some notable VC's
#Pubky tsunami
yes maybe I misunderstood
Yeah, the onboarding / account creation is kinda glitchy.
The pubky ring app requires google services to install and run on android so thats out.
Not verifying with an sms so thats out
Paid 1000 sats invoice only for it to hang after payment sent and never get to next step.
Seems like need to wait awhile longer before its ready.

What’s up with the image compression? Why do the first two of my images look like dog 💩
I read several replies and most people are in agreement, so I'm glad the "reply guys" didn't show up.
I love Nostr. I never really used any other social network, though, so maybe I have a blindspot. I do believe it's an amazing protocol and while I do follow several bitcoiners, I also follow many more people who are not posting about bitcoin on a daily basis. Nostr is hard work, finding your people may be tough.
Agree with everything except the Pubky Ring part.
I don't fuck with Google Play Services. I don't even have it installed, only @Zapstore
The Ring .apk is available on their GitHub:
I've had issues with onboarding / signing in with Pubky Ring too, so I just use a seed phrase.
You don't even need Pubky Ring, it's just a sign up / sign in convenience that protects your private key (when it's working properly).
Might as well make a vanity keypair while you're at it:
Chill3d8ad7a829efa75dae76ab12de76a3now
Alternatively, DM @Big Bad John and get an invite code. That's how I got one, and I'm just a rando reply guy.
I probably should have waited for the onboarding glitches to get ironed out before shilling it, but whatever. I only waited until I was convinced that it had credible decentralization.

Reply guy here to tell you not to let the door hit you on the way out. Have fun proving ID and getting censored/banned/profiled on the big tech oligarch platforms. At least their algorithms will provide that dopamine you're not getting elsewhere. GFY. Nostrich for life. 🎤
You don’t follow me. I barely post about Bitcoin or AI. I mostly post about my research.
@Dr. Hax if you follow me you can't follow Todd.
I don't care much for social media.
I want to discover people not content.
Nostr's been good at that but I'd like it to be a greater focus. More apps /kinds focused on online and in person events, competitions, etc.
Other socials optimise for engagement. If we can use our incentives to do something different, and do it well, we might get some adoption from people that aren't already part of the circle.
Maybe they could be more interesting than Bitcoin worshippers.
Gfy.
Nostr isn't fast food, but a young wine that's maturing and developing a more rich and complex taste by the day. I have had more meaningful interactions on this platform in this short time, than any other platform. Its a huge bonus that I'm not being spied on/censored.

Clients must very aggressively promote fresh content based on topics, beyond just the lazy oversaturating the already saturated content approach, otherwise the platform will be in a dire state. For every person there must be a clear pragmatic answer to "why would I post this on Nostr instead of X?" and not only an idealistic one.
Follow me then
😂❤
1000 sats. is nothing to stress about
Will try the zapstore version
They should be paying their users 1000 “bitcoins” to crash test their buggy ass software.
Sure u can go to x and get your brain fried by the algo. i like the experience here 🤷
Yeah.. following the wrong folks. Mute all the common phrases and hashtags as well.
Just checked @Zapstore - no Pubky Ring app on there yet. You can use the GitHub link above to get the Pubky Ring apk.
The onboarding with Pubky Ring wasn't working yesterday, so the best bet currently is to just DM @Big Bad John for an invite code. That's the most sure fire way to try it out without any hassles.
Follow me for beautiful plants in your Nostr feed 🥦☘️
Yeah. I have around 20+ plus followers after a year. Ok the surface people will think am here just to promote my software, but that isn't true. Don't just talk about crypto, interact. Some posts take a while to produce and I get nothing. Even someone saying - I hate this would be something. Some say it is all about the relays.
The main subject matters seems to be - bitcoin, advanced esoteric technology, hating all other Blockchains and of course - gold and fiat, vibe coding..
Variations include, never selling your bitcoin and buying the dip.
Am not giving up on nostr, but for fuck's sake. It is like a parallel version of X for shadowbanning without nostr needing to shadowban people.
Apologies to the many good eggs on here and the creators.
Being told ‘you’re the problem’ is the surest sign you touched something real. Healthy systems don’t need gaslighting to defend themselves.
what sorts of content are you looking for? You can check my profile and see if that resonates with you. I occassionally talk about AI but from a humanity perspective. I do hope I get to interact with you more. It would be great for you to stay ☺️🫂
#Nostr is still a small community, enjoy while it lasts. I have yet to experience your echo chamber complaint on this platform fyi 🗽

Yeah. I feel the same way about Nostr. There is a serious lack of diverse content…
I’ll keep using Nostr tho, but that’s because I use it as a mini blog for my personal website. I share the progress I make on my apps (currently building a notes app) and Nostr works quite well for this as people can easily generate a Nostr key pair and write replies on my blog posts.
That's a good question. I checked out some of the people recommended in this thread and saw some things that were absolute cringe. But I can think of some things I enjoy on social media...
I like seeing people's gardens and hearing about how they are dealing with problems (pests, blossom end rot, keeping their compost aerobic instead of anaerobic, etc.)
I generally enjoy seeing what people create, as least when their ego doesn't overshadow their work. The same goes for people fixing things up.
Things that make me think, doubly so if it's not just theories, but is something actionable.
Follow me. My story is true. Read it in Redacted Science. Now, it's a continuous broadcast of my 30-year case study revealing science that was abandoned and (perhaps) why - it has major evolutionary implications.
I'm just one guy building so that the indexes remember this time.
Try me.
I've become "the expert" on Redacted Science (which amuses me to no end.)

It's a good reason.
Sometimes people see them, sometimes they don't. I'm not sure why, but my guess is that it's because DMs are no longer always sent to the same relays where public posts are sent. So you can see public messages, but DMs go to some relay you never connected to.
Or maybe it's something else, but either way, I can say I've seen others complain about this issue and have also experienced it first hand.
Here are 2 follow packs. Check the npubs listed there, maybe you find something, but I don't know if you can see them in any other app than Amethyst.

I wonder if any devs actually pay attention to this sort of feedback? I've not seen any sign of it or even any mention...?
You were right about the replies too, it's all so predictable (and now we have 'agents' chiming in with their shite). The classic bitcointwitter cringe posturing 'gfy' 'you just want the dopamine algo, maaan'. They are saying this because their needs are met. Nostr isnt a twitter clone, it's a bitcointwitter clone, it's bitcointwitter2 aka the Bitcoin Tourettes Chatroom. They have the place they want, they say their stupid slogans.
The idea that nostr is inevitable is also not very helpful. It's far from inevitable. I think in the worst case scenario of even more draconian social media laws people would simply rather have no social media than join Bitcointwitter2.
Same lol.
And I don't have to worry about them joining either:)
Wait till you meet the ai bros
They are busy perfecting their slop machines so that they can make their apps worse
The 'niche account' is probably a fairly good barometer of a protocol, and there's really not that many on nostr (not saying I have found them all, but still).

#community_nostr_recapWe don’t have good niche topic / curated community content tools yet
if nostr is boring you, what is exciting you outside of it?
I think you would have been blasted for saying this a year or two ago, now I think people are starting to see it. There are a couple things you can do to make life a little more tolerable:
1. Mute all the normal bitcoin slogans that get repeated ad nauseam. All of em, if people want to parrot bumper stickers let them do it into the void.
2. Rely on the Mastodon bridges. They've been kind of spotty for me lately, but mostr(.)pub and momostr(.)pink bring Fediverse content to nostr. You have a better chance of getting more interesting niche content there.
3. Reply to accounts you do find here that aren't real bots or human equivalent of bots like mad. Those are the accounts to try to save.
4. Try to limit how much you yourself talk about bitcoin here, reduce the problem by one. I allow myself one bitcoin related post per week for example.
@Ch!llN0w1 sorry for the experience you had! Are you able to provide some more details related to this - did you use a VPN to access the site, what browser were you using?
Plan is to make a local relay for local people. Charge for data beyond 90 days. Chronological feed. Should be interesting.
at least you are being replied to and not got shadow banned by the freedom of everything people lol "stay quiet and stack lies"
i also feel the same nostr shouldnt be about only bitcoin talks and decentralization there are so many possibilities to explore we are just copy pasting the ideas of web 2.0 in nostr protocol but hopefully in coming years we are going to see something interesting
Firefox browser
VPN
Android 8.1.0

easily one of my favorite nostr finds 👆🏼
Lol. Sure
I'm pretty stoked about the local meshtastic network. It's getting strong in town and expanding to nearby towns with long range, directional links.
Automating self-hosting for myself and other is fun.
House projects like building a shed, garden trellises, improving & using the shop, preserving food, and modeling and printing objects that I need (hingepin recpticle for a bifold door, guide for a barn door, guide for a pocket door, and... umm, I'm pretty sure I print parts for things other than doors too... lol)
I kinda agree, but there are exciting niches. My picks: naddr1qvzqqqyckypzp9d30dvsy57rne4l6ley986q64qt0muyxcgv8kkmd97myt04x6amqqx5ymmtvynhxgzrd9exxmr98lxxl4
